Aux Merveilleux de Fred Kensington

Meringue-and-cream merveilleux from Lille, in an arcade off the Tube station.

The merveilleux is the thing: two discs of meringue sandwiched with whipped cream, rolled in shaved chocolate and left to soften for a day, which is a speciality of Lille rather than Paris and still rare here. Beside them are cramiques — an enriched brioche shot through with raisins or pearl sugar — and thick waffles filled to order. Everything is made on the premises. It sits under one of the arcades at the High Street Kensington station entrance, a few steps off the pavement and easy to walk past without seeing.
