Frederic Leighton, the painter of Flaming June and the only artist ever made a peer, had George Aitchison build him a house and studio on the edge of Holland Park in 1866 and spent the next thirty years adding to it, and the addition everyone comes for is the Arab Hall of 1877 to 1881: a domed room built to show the tiles he had brought back from Damascus, Cairo and Rhodes, with a gold mosaic frieze by Walter Crane, latticed windows from Cairo and a fountain in the floor, a piece of the Islamic world set down in Kensington. Upstairs is the great studio where he painted, hung with his pictures and his collection, and the one narrow bedroom of a man who lived for work and never married. It has been open since 1929, and a restoration finished in 2022 put back what had gone, added a wing and a winter studio, and reopened the whole house with a café in the garden. It is run with Sambourne House nearby, and closes on Tuesdays.
