Edward III's strongroom, one of two pieces of the medieval Palace of Westminster left standing.

Built in 1365 at the far corner of the palace grounds to hold the king's personal treasure, with a moat around it and vaulted ceilings whose carved bosses survive. Everything else of the medieval palace except Westminster Hall burnt in 1834; this survived because it was outside the wall, and by then it was the House of Lords' records office and later the office that kept the national standards of weight and measure. Three floors of exhibits tell those three lives, and among them are carved stone capitals from the palace Edward the Confessor built on this spot three hundred years before the tower itself.
