The collection is London itself, from the Thames before there was a city to the week before last, and nothing else in the country has that as its whole subject. Among it: the vest Charles I wore to the scaffold, Emmeline Pankhurst's hunger strike medal, a Banksy.
The new home is Horace Jones's General Market of 1883, by the architect of Tower Bridge and Leadenhall Market, restored rather than replaced and with the ironwork kept. Three permanent galleries - Past Time, Our Time and Real Time - and free to walk into. The opening programme, London Tastes, is about what the city eats, edited by Ruby Tandoh and Jonathan Nunn.
It is not open yet. The old London Wall building shut on 4 December 2022 and the museum has had nowhere to show the collection since; the doors at Smithfield open on 28 November 2026, and there is nothing to visit before then.
