Performance venues

London's stages and concert rooms: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

What is on at them this week is in What's On: Performance

Three rooms in a Smithfield cold store, and a dancefloor that plays through your feet.

GigsLate

It opened in 1999 in the cold-storage building opposite Smithfield market and became the club by which other London clubs were measured. Room One has a bodysonic floor — bass transducers under the boards, so the low end arrives through the soles rather than the ears — and the layout keeps the three rooms far enough apart to be genuinely different nights.

It lost its licence in 2016 after two deaths and got it back on appeal three months later, which turned into a national argument about whether British cities intend to have nightlife at all.
