The British Army's own museum, free, beside the Royal Hospital, and unusually frank about what soldiers have been asked to do.

Founded by Royal Charter in 1960 to hold the army's story as a whole, where every regiment kept its own, the museum sits on Royal Hospital Road beside the Chelsea Pensioners, and a rebuilding finished in 2017 turned a brown brick bunker into an open building of five galleries that ask questions: Soldier, on who joins and what it does to them; Army, on how the institution grew from the Civil War; Battle, from Waterloo to Helmand; Society, on how the army has shaped Britain and been shaped by it, empire and Northern Ireland included; and Insight, on the army's dealings with the world. It is strongest on the personal, kit, letters and recordings rather than tanks, and it does not flinch. From the summer of 2026 it also shows Lord Ashcroft's collection of Victoria and George Crosses, the largest in the world. Entry is free.
