Henry VIII had this built in 1542 as the Great Standing, a three-storey timber tower on the edge of the forest at Chingford from which the court could watch the deer being driven past and shoot at them from the upper floors, which were open to the air; the floors were boarded in later, and it was done up for Elizabeth I in 1589, which is how it got her name. The frame is largely the original oak, and the rooms are shown with the Tudor kitchen and the great chamber laid out for a hunting party. The City of London, which has owned Epping Forest since 1878, has looked after it since 1960 and opens it free, with The View, its visitor centre for the forest, in the old stables next door and a pub on the other side.
