The Rose has been shut to casual visitors for years and opens again this autumn, on Thursdays. The remains are kept under water to stop the timbers drying out and are picked out beneath it in illuminated rope, so you can see the shape of the yard and the stage through both phases of the building. The guides bring artefacts you can handle and read from Henslowe's accounts, which survive in a completeness no other Elizabethan theatre can match, and the tour covers the 1587 building, the people who worked in it, the 1989 dig that found it by accident and the campaign of actors that stopped it being built over again. Forty-five minutes with questions at the end. £12, or £8 with concessions, and free to Southwark residents, to carers with a Plus One Access card, and to up to four children aged fifteen or under with an adult. Booking required, and there is no heating.
