The Globe of 1599 was raised here by the Burbages from the timbers of their Shoreditch theatre, carried over the river in the winter of 1598. It burned in 1613 when a cannon fired during Henry VIII set the thatch alight, was rebuilt the next year and was pulled down in 1644. A plaque on the wall of the old brewery and a line of stones set into the ground trace part of the polygon that archaeologists found in 1989, under the corner of a historically protected Georgian terrace that could not be moved to reveal the rest.
