Comptons took a Victorian corner pub where Old Compton Street meets Wardour Street and reopened it as a gay bar in 1986, at a point when doing that openly on a main Soho street was a decision rather than a given. It is two floors: a wide ground-floor bar with its windows onto the pavement, which was rather the point, and a quieter room above it. The crowd is older and mixed, there is no door policy to speak of, and it is the least self-conscious room on the street.
