Espresso for about a pound and a half at the counter of an 1887 bean merchant, to take away - there is nowhere to sit and never has been.

The shop has sold coffee on Old Compton Street since 1887, and the espresso machine at the back is an afterthought to the real business, which is beans by weight from the tins behind the counter - more than eighty of them, plus a hundred-odd teas. That is why it is here: the coffee is cheap because selling it is not the point, and it is good because the people selling it roast and grade for a living.
Order at the counter and drink it in the street. The staff will grind for whatever you brew on if you ask, and they will tell you when a bean was roasted.
