Mayfair's night does not happen on a street, which is why it takes some finding. The clubs are scattered across the neighbourhood behind doors that advertise nothing - Tabu at the bottom of Dover Street, The Mayfair Club at the top of it and running until six at the weekend, Tape over on Hanover Square, Maddox off Mill Street - and most of them work by guestlist or a booked table rather than by turning up at the door. The two with the real reputations, Annabel's on Berkeley Square and Loulou's on Hertford Street, are members' clubs and admit nobody else at all.
Number 1 Dover Street was Mahiki for fifteen years, the tiki bar the tabloids photographed royalty leaving; it closed in 2021 and Tabu has the room now. What is left for anyone who has not planned the evening in advance is the hotel bars, which are seriously good and genuinely open to whoever walks in - the Connaught, Claridge's and the Dorchester each keep one.
The exception, and the one part of Mayfair that behaves like an ordinary night out, is Shepherd Market: two small squares between Piccadilly and Curzon Street, laid out in the 1730s on the open ground where the May fair that names the district was held. Ye Grapes has been on it since 1882 and nobody is going to ask who you are.
