The courtyard is the one people come for: Dan Pearson planted it in 2017 as a botanical cabinet of curiosities, densely and deliberately unruly, and it is walled and glazed enough to hold plants that would not otherwise stand a Lambeth winter. The front garden is two ideas meeting round a piazza - shady woodland on one side, a Mediterranean dry garden on the other - and it is the one you walk through to get in.
All of it sits in the churchyard of St Mary-at-Lambeth, which is why the tombs are in the planting rather than beside it. The Tradescants, father and son, are here under a chest tomb carved with crocodiles and ruined temples, and Captain Bligh of the Bounty is a few feet away. A third garden, a community plot for growing food, is across the road in Old Paradise Gardens.
The museum's own gardeners keep it, with volunteers.
