From 1661 until 1859 this was the most famous pleasure garden in Europe, and people came over the river by boat to walk its lit avenues, listen to music and eat its notoriously thin ham. The rehearsal for Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks drew twelve thousand here in 1749 and stopped the traffic on London Bridge for three hours. The gardens closed and streets went over most of them; this field is what was left, and it still carries the old name of Spring Gardens as well as the new one.
