The first building in Britain protected for its place in LGBTQ history, and still a cabaret pub.

The Tavern was built between 1860 and 1862 on the edge of the old Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, and has been a gay venue since at least the 1940s — through the years when that was illegal, when police raided it, and through the epidemic that took much of its audience in the 1980s. Lily Savage worked the room for years and was on stage during one of the raids.
In September 2015 it became the first building in the country to be protected specifically for its importance to LGBTQ history. It is still a working pub with a stage in the middle of it: drag, cabaret, club nights and the long-running Duckie on Saturdays.
