Victoria Park

East London's own, with two lakes, a good café and the canal along its edge.

The oldest public park in the country, opened in 1845 after a petition signed by thirty thousand East Enders. Two lakes, a bandstand, a pair of alcoves rescued from the old London Bridge, and the Pavilion café on the water — one of the better park cafés in London. The Hertford Union Canal runs along the south side and joins the Regent's Canal at the western corner. It takes a beating for a fortnight each August, when All Points East sets up on the west side, and has the place to itself again by September.
