Wanstead House was one of the great houses of England, built by Colen Campbell between 1715 and 1722 for the banking heir Sir Richard Child and pulled down in 1825 after the man who married its heiress had gambled and spent her fortune away, and the park is what the demolition men left: the chain of lakes, the Glade running east from where the house stood, the Grotto of the 1760s that burned in 1884 and stands as a ruin on the Ornamental Water, and the Temple, which is open at weekends with the finds from the grotto and from the Roman villa found under the park. The City of London bought it in 1880 from Earl Cowley and manages it as part of Epping Forest. Chalet Wood is a sheet of bluebells in late April, and herons nest on the islands of the Heronry Pond.
