Historic interior
Built in 1855, or in the 1860s depending which record you take, rebuilt early in the twentieth century, and once a Friary Meux house. Four rooms were merged into one, though the drinking areas are still distinct within it.
Two things here are genuinely rare. The carved mahogany back cabinet, with lion heads on it, holds an old-style bar cash office - the little booth where the money went, which has gone from almost everywhere else. And one of the earliest gas pressure gauges still in existence is here. The ceiling is hung with instruments, tricycles and lamps, and the walls with theatre posters and enamel signs.
Five handpumps at the front with four in use; the two at the back are there for the look of them. It has been a runner-up in Islington in Bloom.
