An 1851 back-street pub still built round its original island bar, under cast-iron columns and a Lincrusta ceiling.
Historic interior
Built in 1851 and altered inside around 1889 and again in 1897, and what survives of those alterations is good. The central island bar is the original, with a small bar-back and an optic stand that began life as its cradle; there are cast-iron Corinthian columns, a Lincrusta ceiling and dado panelling. The back bar has a good set of mirrors of about 1900 and a fireplace of the late nineteenth century. Some partitioning survives at the entrance with its glass renewed, and a fragment of frieze is still there behind a food counter put in much later. The pool room at the rear keeps panelling from the early twentieth century, and the cellars run under the road.
The huge clear windows are not original, which is worth knowing before you judge the front.
It was in CAMRA's very first Good Beer Guide, selling Charrington IPA, and was still selling cask in 2023, for which it was given a fiftieth-anniversary award. Cask came off in January 2026; the manager rotates one or two when it is on.
