The building is of about 1830, with a pub front of about 1900 - yellow brick in Flemish bond and stucco, three storeys, five bays of pilasters, segmental-arched windows and engraved glass to each street, and a moulded sill band with palmette ornament along Essex Road. The corner entrance is a window now and the first two bays in Queen's Head Street are bricked up.
None of that is why it was put on the register in 1954, decades before pubs were generally thought worth listing. Two pieces of the earlier house on this site were kept when it came down. Over the bar of the public bar there is an early seventeenth-century ceiling of modelled plasterwork, bands of scrolling floral ornament making panels that enclose emblems, some of them in cartouches. And in the north-west corner, between panelled walls, stands an early seventeenth-century chimneypiece: a stone hearth surround with term figures either side carrying an entablature, two carved panels of narrative scenes under a strapwork frieze, and above that the whole thing continuing in wood with three more term figures, decorated panels between them and a bracketed cornice.
It is a busy Essex Road pub with a karaoke room and a quiz, and a Jacobean fireplace in the corner that nobody mentions.
