Historic interior
The building is ordinary mid-Victorian and the inside is not. In 1891 William B. Simpson & Sons fitted it out in polychrome tile, gold embossed glass by R. Morris & Son, stained glass and mahogany bar fittings, with four cast-iron Corinthian columns at the middle of the island bar holding up a patterned ceiling and a tiled frieze of urns and swags. There is a wrought-iron staircase and an Art Nouveau dado in the first-floor bar.
Go downstairs as well. The gents' is protected in its own right - marble urinals with their original tiling and fittings - and people do ask to look.
One honest note, because CAMRA makes it. The wood-and-etched-glass compartments that make the room what it is were put back by Sam Smith's in 2007, not left over from 1891. It is a reinstatement rather than a survival, and it is a very good one.
