Rebuilt in 1677 after a fire, the George is the one survivor of the galleried inns that lined Borough High Street, and the National Trust owns it. Dickens drank here and gave it a line in Little Dorrit, where Tip writes his begging letter from it; the Tabard, where Chaucer's pilgrims gathered, stood next door. Only the south range stands, one arm of what was a three-sided courtyard, and the wooden galleries above the yard are the last of their kind in London.
