The Wall at Vine Street

A stretch of wall and the only Roman bastion foundations on show in London, under a student block, free.

Found in 1979 when the site was cleared, along with a bastion nobody knew was there, and kept in the basement of what was built on top. The wall runs for some ten metres with the foundations of the bastion projecting from it - the only Roman bastion, as opposed to a medieval one, that can be seen in London. It has stood through the end of the empire, the plague, the Great Fire and the Blitz, and for most of that time it was inside somebody's workshop or warehouse.

Around it is a gallery of what came out of the ground on the same site across two thousand years: Roman pottery and coins, medieval leather, Victorian clay pipes. Free, no booking, and there is a coffee bar by the roasters Senzo in the same building.
