Nash built it for the Duke of Clarence in 1827 and it has been the spare royal house ever since: Princess Elizabeth and Philip moved in in 1949 with the baby Charles, left for the palace when she became Queen, and her mother took it for the next fifty years, receiving the birthday crowds at the gate each August until she was a hundred and one. Charles and Camilla lived here from 2003 until his accession. It opens for one month a year, in August, when the ground-floor rooms are shown as the Queen Mother had them, with her paintings and the china.
