William McMillan's statue of George VI in the robes of the Garter went up on the steps between Carlton House Terrace and the Mall in 1955, three years after his death; the Queen unveiled Philip Jackson's bronze of her mother beside it in 2009, with two bronze reliefs below showing the couple among the bombed-out East Enders of 1940 and the King with the racing crowd. The Crown's first episodes are this couple's last years, and the two of them look down the processional route their daughter travelled for seventy years.
