Put up in 1743 as La Neuve Eglise for French Protestant refugees, it became a Methodist chapel, then in 1891 the Machzike Hadath synagogue for Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe, and since 1976 the mosque of the Bangladeshi community. Three centuries of arrival in one set of walls, on the corner of Brick Lane and Fournier Street. High on the Fournier Street face is the sundial of 1743 and its motto, Umbra sumus: we are shadows.
