The largest Sikh temple outside India, on Havelock Road in Southall, open to anyone from three in the morning, with a free meal for all who sit down.

Southall has been the centre of Sikh life in Britain since the 1950s, and this is its great temple: a building of white marble and gold domes on Havelock Road that opened on 30 March 2003, paid for entirely by the congregation at a cost of £17.5 million, and the largest gurdwara outside India. Some fifty thousand people come through in a week. Anyone may follow them, whatever their faith: shoes come off at the door, heads are covered with a scarf from the basket at the entrance, and the prayer hall upstairs holds the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scripture, read and sung to through the day. Downstairs is the langar, the kitchen that feeds everyone who sits down, free, in rows on the floor, which is the heart of what a gurdwara is for. The community's older gurdwara on Park Avenue is a short walk away.
