Opened in 1995 and built by traditional means: five thousand tonnes of Italian marble and Bulgarian limestone shipped to India, carved by hand into twenty-six thousand pieces, then shipped again and assembled in London like a puzzle. There is no structural steel anywhere in it. Under the same roof is Understanding Hinduism, a permanent exhibition, and the whole thing sits in a Brent suburb, which is much of the surprise.
