In Focus: Nurse Catherine Pine

The nurse who took hunger-striking suffragettes into her own nursing home.

HistoryFree

At Florence Nightingale Museum.

Catherine Pine trained at St Bartholomew's and ran a nursing home in London that became the place suffragettes went to recover after force-feeding in Holloway; Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughter Sylvia were among them, and Pine stayed close to the family for the rest of her life. Her medal, an adapted version of the WSPU hunger-strike medal, went missing in the 1950s and was found again in 2023; it is on display for the first time. Included with admission.
