Billingsgate sells more fish than anywhere else inland in Britain, and it sells to the public as well as the trade: turn up between four and half past eight, Tuesday to Saturday, and you can buy whole fish, shellfish and a range no fishmonger carries, in box quantities and at trade money. Cash is welcome, and haggling is normal near the end of the morning when what is left has to go.
Nobody minds you coming to look rather than to buy, which - given that it is going at four in the morning - makes it one of the few things in London worth doing when you are awake and nothing else is. It is a working floor rather than a shop, though, and the conditions are strict: no children under twelve, babies in buggies included; no dogs except accredited assistance dogs; nothing on wheels, so no trolleys, suitcases or folding carts; and the floor is wet all morning, so non-slip shoes, with flip-flops and open toes turned away. Parking is three pounds for two hours, through RingGo.
It is expected to move. The City of London, which runs it, named Albert Island in the Royal Docks on 3 December 2025 as its preferred site, under the name New Billingsgate. An Act of Parliament is needed before the market can stop trading here, and planning permission from Newham, so there is no date.
