A back lane laid out in 1767 that the traffic never reached, which is why the shopfronts are still there. Antique dealers moved in from the 1960s and stayed: some in shops, the rest on stalls that appear on Wednesday and Saturday mornings selling silver, prints, old jewellery and things nobody can put a name to. Cafés and small restaurants have taken the rest. Charles Lamb, the essayist, lived in the cottage at the end, and the pub round the corner is named after him. The whole thing is barely three hundred yards long and feels a street away from the one it runs behind.
