Charles Digby Harrod turned his father's tea shop into a department store on this site in the 1850s, and the building went up in stages around it: terracotta outside, and inside the food halls of 1902 under Doulton tiles of hunting scenes and fish. The Egyptian escalator is worth riding for its own sake. The motto over the door claims all things for all people everywhere, which is close enough - there is a pet department, a barber, and a room that sells nothing but salt.
There is a dress code, enforced unevenly, and a browse-only half hour before Sunday trading starts.
