John Spedan Lewis handed the business to its staff in stages from 1929, and everyone who works here is a partner with a share of the profits. The Oxford Street store was gutted by bombing in 1940 and rebuilt in the fifties; the haberdashery is the part people come across London for, and the rooftop has a garden and a bar in summer.
