The firm goes back to a market stall in 1742 and has been on Jermyn Street since 1797. Churchill's line - that a gentleman only buys his cheese at Paxton & Whitfield - is on the wall, and the shop is small, cold and smells exactly as it should.
It is the place for Stilton, Montgomery's cheddar and the territorial cheeses that are hard to find whole anywhere else. They will vacuum-pack for travel.
