Open House at the Geological Society

William Smith's first geological map of England and Wales, and two tiers of library, open to anyone for one day.

HistoryFree

At Geological Society of London.

The Geological Society throws open its apartments at Burlington House: the entrance hall, where Smith's map of 1815 hangs beside a painting of Mary Anning; the double and triple-tiered Upper and Lower Libraries; the Council Room and the lecture theatre. There is an exhibition of fossils collected by nineteenth-century women geologists whose names went unrecorded, and a self-guided tour of the building stones themselves. Free, open to all, no booking, 10:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:30.
