Chris Jackson, technical director at the engineering firm WSP and visiting professor of basin analysis at Imperial College London, explains the search for a site for a deep underground repository: what the rock has to do, how a case is made that it will hold, and where geologists sit in a decision that is at least as political as it is technical.
