Guided Tours

Guided tours worth booking: walks led by people who know the streets, and the bus, river and cycling tours that earn their fare. Each is drawn on the map as the ground it covers, from where it meets.

Gin Lane: Hogarth and the Gin Craze

Hogarth's 1751 print, and the streets of Covent Garden and St Giles it was drawn about.

Every Wednesday, 14:30Walking

Gin Lane and Beer Street were published together in 1751 as propaganda for a bill to control the gin trade, and Gin Lane is set in St Giles, which was then the worst slum in London. The walk covers the ground Hogarth was drawing and the crisis he was drawing it about - cheap spirits, an unregulated trade and a city that drank itself into a public health emergency - led by a guide who edited Time Out.
