Guided tours worth booking: walks led by people who know the streets, and the bus, river and cycling tours that earn their fare. Each is drawn on the map as the ground it covers, from where it meets.

Hampstead kept its lanes because the hill made them awkward to widen, and the result is a village street plan a few hundred feet above the city with the Heath at the top of it. The walk goes through the alleys and steps between the main streets, past the houses of people who came up here to write and paint because it was cheap and quiet, and explains how the spa water and the coaching trade made the place before the artists did.
