The square mile is simultaneously the oldest part of London and the most aggressively rebuilt, and at half past six on a Tuesday the people have gone and both are visible at once - a Roman street line with a glass tower on it, a Wren church in a canyon. The walk is about that collision, which is easier to see when there is nobody in the way.
