Performance venues

London's stages and concert rooms: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

What is on at them this week is in What's On: Performance

Arcola Theatre

A former textile factory in Dalston, running on solar panels and a pay-what-you-can night.

PlayhousesFringe & pubs

Mehmet Ergen and Leyla Nazli opened the Arcola in a disused textile factory on Arcola Street in 2000, and moved it round the corner to a former paint workshop on Ashwin Street in 2011. Two main spaces and a tent outside in summer.

It has an unusually wide programme for its size — new writing, classics, and Grimeborn, an opera festival every August that stages full operas with a handful of players — and it has spent years trying to run the building on its own renewable power. Tuesdays are pay what you can.
