It is a charity, run largely by volunteers, in an upstairs room with a bar and no glamour whatsoever. What it has instead is the most adventurous programme in the city: new British bands, free improvisation, European and African players who would not fill a larger room, and a booking policy that treats an unproven group as worth an evening.
A good part of the generation of London players who now sell out bigger halls played the Vortex first, which is the argument for going on a night when you have not heard of anyone on the bill.
