Performance venues

London's stages and concert rooms: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

What is on at them this week is in What's On: Performance

Café OTO

A café by day and, by night, the room in Europe most likely to be putting on something nobody has a name for.

Jazz

It opened in 2008 in a former print works and programmes free improvisation, experimental composition, noise, and the far edges of jazz - often musicians with fifty years of a career behind them and no other London venue that would have them. The room is plain, the chairs do not match, and the audience listens in a silence that can be unnerving.

In daylight it is simply a café with good coffee, open to anyone, and the same room looks entirely ordinary.
