It is a pub in a residential street off Brixton Hill, holding about a hundred and fifty, with a stage at one end and a dog that has historically been allowed on the roof. What makes it matter is the booking: Tim Perry has programmed it for two decades and has consistently taken bands nobody else would, including Black Midi's first gig.
The run of groups that came through in the late 2010s and early 2020s — Black Country New Road, Squid, Shame, Goat Girl, Fat White Family — got called the Windmill scene, which is a lot of weight for a hundred-and-fifty-capacity pub to carry and it carries it lightly.
