Performance venues

London's stages and concert rooms: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

Bush Theatre

New writing in a Passmore Edwards library, 180 seats and no proscenium.

PlayhousesWorth it for the building

It began on 6 April 1972 in a former dance studio above the Bush pub on Shepherd's Bush Green, and moved in 2011 into the old Passmore Edwards public library on Uxbridge Road, which suits it better than it should.

The point of it is writers at the start: Stephen Poliakoff, David Edgar, Billy Roche and Enda Walsh all had early work staged here. 180 seats in the main house and 70 in the studio.
