Dennis Kelly kept the cruelty in Roald Dahl's book rather than sanding it off, and Tim Minchin's songs are cleverer than children's musicals usually risk being. In School Song the new pupils spell out the alphabet while they climb the school gates, a letter a bar, and the joke is that the letters are already built into the set. The Royal Shakespeare Company made it and still runs it, which shows in the staging: alphabet blocks everywhere, and the swings come out over the audience.
Two hours thirty-five including the interval. Weekday evening performances start at 19:00 rather than the usual 19:30. Flashing lights, lasers, haze and popped balloons, and the cast come out into the audience.
