Wimperis, Simpson and Guthrie built it in steel and concrete and opened it on 4 September 1930, set at the point where Earlham Street meets the Seven Dials junction. Serge Chermayeff did much of the interior, and the decoration is the reason to look: the entrance foyer is circular and carries a bronze frieze by the sculptor Anthony Gibbons Grinling of nude figures in exercise poses, the theme running on into the main foyer with dancing nudes, marble pilaster uplighters and lighting concealed in the plaster.
The lines are clean throughout rather than gilded, which is unusual among the Victorian houses around it. 1,231 seats on three levels, historically protected at grade II, and run by LW Theatres.
