Performance venues

London's stages and concert rooms: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

What is on at them this week is in What's On: Performance

Conway Hall

The oldest continuous chamber music series in the world, in a hall built for freethinkers, on Sunday evenings from October.

The Conway Hall Sunday Concerts have run since 1878 and are the longest-running chamber music series anywhere. They take place in the main hall of the Ethical Society's building on Red Lion Square, which was built for lectures rather than music and has the plain, well-lit, slightly municipal character that comes of it.

Tickets are cheap by any standard, the season runs from autumn to spring, and the programming is straight chamber repertoire played by professional quartets and ensembles rather than a novelty attached to the building's politics.
