Performance venues

London's stages and concert rooms: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

Peacock Theatre

Sadler's Wells' West End house, for the dance that wants a bigger room than Rosebery Avenue.

The London School of Economics bought the theatre in 1996 for lectures, conferences and open days, renamed it the Peacock and leased the evenings to Sadler's Wells — so the room is a lecture theatre by day and a dance house by night, and the two have shared it ever since. It was built as the Royalty Theatre in 1960, in the basement of an office block on Portugal Street behind Kingsway.

What Sadler's Wells puts in it is the work that wants a bigger room than Rosebery Avenue: the flamenco and tango seasons, touring companies with a following, and a Christmas run for children that comes back most years. It opens an hour before a performance rather than all day, and under-fives are generally not admitted.
