Built on the site of the brewery whose vat burst in 1814 and drowned eight people in beer.

The Horse Shoe Brewery stood here from 1746, and in October 1814 one of its vats gave way and released several hundred thousand gallons of porter into the streets of St Giles, killing eight people. A cinema replaced it in 1911, and W and T. R. Milburn built the present theatre in 1929 - 2,835 seats originally, about 2,163 now on two levels, and historically protected.
It spent most of the twentieth century as a cinema and only went back to live performance for good in 1981. It is one of the largest houses in the West End and takes the musicals that need the room.
