Performance venues

London's stages and concert rooms: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

What is on at them this week is in What's On: Performance

Downstairs at the King's Head

A cellar under a Crouch End pub where the circuit works out what is funny.

Fringe & pubsComedy club

The room is the basement of the King's Head on the corner where Crouch End Hill meets the Broadway, and the week turns on the try-out night: five or six acts, one of them usually unannounced, working new material on a room that has come to watch them do it. Sunday afternoons are given to jazz, free on the door.

It is a long way from a tube station and people come anyway, which is the only recommendation a comedy cellar needs.
